ze / ゼ
The fourth Z-row katakana — セ with a dakuten becomes “ze.” Opens zero, jelly, and present.
Pronunciation
The character ゼ represents the syllable 'ze'. It is セ with the dakuten that voices 's' to 'z'. Common in loanwords for zero, present, presentation.
ゼ is セ (se) plus the dakuten ゛. It opens loanwords like ゼロ (zero), ゼリー (jelly), ゼブラ (zebra), and appears in プレゼント (present). Same セ shape, voiced to “ze.”
How to write ゼ
Trace ゼ on the canvas at the top of the page. Animated arrows show each stroke's direction; trace along them and the stroke fills in. Each numbered step below explains what that stroke does.
Write セ exactly: a horizontal stroke rising to the right, then a long vertical crossing it and hooking right at the bottom.
Add the dakuten (゛): two small ticks at the upper right — strokes 3 and 4 — sitting above the body.
Origin
Katakana ゼ shares its shape with セ, taken from the kanji 世 (se, “world”). The dakuten ゛ voices “se” into “ze.”
