Person, Child, Car

Four kanji you'll meet constantly: 人 (person), the pair 子 + 供 that joins into 子供 (kodomo, child), and 車 (kuruma, car). 人 is a shape-shifter — ひと on its own, but ジン in nationality words, so 日本 (Japan) becomes 日本人 (Japanese person) and アメリカ becomes アメリカ人. Pair 子供 with 大人 (otona, adult) and you have the two ages everyone learns first.

人 reads ひと alone, ジン in nationality words (日本人, アメリカ人), and ニン as a counter. 子 is こ (child); 供 only appears bound in 子供, where it voices to ども (rendaku). 大人 (otona) is jukujikun — an irregular whole-word reading you memorise, not 大 + 人 summed. 車 is くるま alone but シャ in compounds like 電車 (densha, train).
