About this set
Six kanji for things changing state — the heart of the transitive/intransitive pairs. 開 (open) and 閉 (close), 落 (drop/fall), and 消 (turn off/disappear) each do double duty depending on the okurigana: 開ける (akeru, to open) vs 開く (hiraku, opens). Round it off with 電 + 気 = 電気 (denki, electricity/lights) — the thing you switch on and off.

Reading notes
Each verb kanji has a transitive (〜eru) and intransitive (〜u/iru) reading: 開ける/開く, 閉める/閉まる, 落とす/落ちる, 消す/消える — the okurigana, not the kanji, tells them apart. 電 (デン) powers 電気, 電車, 電話; 気 (キ) returns in 元気 and 天気.
