Reading notes
料 (リョウ) + 理 (リ, reason/logic) = 料理; 理 reappears in 理由 (reason), 無理 (impossible). 切 is セツ in 親切/大切 but き.る (to cut) as a verb — you'll drill that reading in a later set. 辛 is から.い (spicy); also シン in 辛抱 (patience).
