Student, Teacher, Friend

The first kanji set introduced in Grammar lesson 1 (State-of-Being) — three everyday "people" words for the most useful nouns in any conversation: 学生 (gakusei, student), 先生 (sensei, teacher), 友達 (tomodachi, friend). Five unique kanji once you collapse 学生 + 先生's shared 生 — a comfortable first drill.

学 and 先 are both on-readings in compounds (ガク, セン); 生 carries both セイ (in 学生/先生) and いきる/うむ in standalone forms. 友 is the kun reading とも; 達 in 友達 is voiced (だち) — a common rendaku you'll meet again.
