Learn Japanese Vocabulary with a Crossword
A free Japanese vocabulary crossword built from your own study decks. Choose a deck and the game interlocks its words into a dense grid — every answer is a word's kana reading and every clue is its meaning. Instead of typing, you fill each square by handwriting the kana, stroke by stroke.
How it works
Tap a cell or a clue to select a word, then write its reading one character at a time on the writing canvas. Chevron guides show each stroke's direction; get a stroke wrong and it simply resets so you can try again. Complete a character and it drops into the grid and the cursor advances. Fill every square correctly to solve the puzzle. Use New Puzzle to reshuffle the same deck into a fresh layout, or Clear to wipe your answers.
Where the words come from
The word source is whichever deck you pick. Your decks come from the Decks page — a set of ready-made decks (like Minna no Nihongo lessons) is available from the start, and any deck you build yourself from the Word Library shows up here too. A deck needs at least six words with kana readings to build a crossword.
Do I need to type Japanese?
No. You never type — you fill each cell by handwriting the kana reading on the canvas, guided stroke by stroke, so no Japanese keyboard is required.
Which words appear in the puzzle?
Only the words in the deck you select. Pick a different deck from the dropdown to build a crossword from a different set of vocabulary.
I don't have any decks — what do I do?
A collection of ready-made decks is added automatically, so you can usually play right away. To make your own, head to the Word Library, add words to a deck, then return here and pick it.
Is it free?
Yes — completely free, no account required, and it works on phones, tablets, and desktops.
