About this set

The verbs that run a day. 食べる (taberu, to eat) and 飲む (nomu, to drink) keep you fed; 買う (kau, to buy) and 売る (uru, to sell) are a tidy opposite pair that even look like mirror images.

Reading notes

食 is た.べる (ショク in 食事/食堂, and reinforced in 食べた later). 飲 の.む (イン in 飲料). 買 か.う / 売 う.る are the buy/sell pair — 売 also バイ in 売店 (kiosk). Note 買 and 売 share the 貝 (shell=money) element on top.
