GYAGYUGYO Hiragana Flashcards — Printable, Front and Back

Beginner-friendly Japanese words you can read with the GY combined kana (ぎゃ, ぎゅ, ぎょ) plus every row you already know. The GY yōon group is the first of the diacritic yōon — it's KY (きゃ/きゅ/きょ) with two tiny ticks (゛) added. It opens the door to milk (牛乳), business (業), and a small set of vivid onomatopoeia. Print on letter-size paper, flip on the long edge, cut along the dashed lines.

Free Printable Hiragana Flashcards for Beginners

These GYAGYUGYO hiragana flashcards drill the eighth set of yōon combined kana — ぎ plus a small ゃ, ゅ, or ょ. Like all yōon, these form a single syllable (gya, gyu, gyo). The GY group is the dakuten counterpart of the KY group (KY + ゛ = GY) — same shapes, voiced /g/ instead of /k/.

You get double-sided flashcards printed on letter-size paper (8.5 × 11 inches). The front of each card shows the Japanese word in hiragana; the back shows the English meaning plus the romaji reading. The GY combined kana unlock essentials: 牛乳 (gyuunyuu, 'milk'), 牛 (gyuu, 'cow / beef'), 業 (gyou, 'business / industry'), 行儀 (gyougi, 'manners'), 行列 (gyouretsu, 'queue / procession'), and the vivid onomatopoeia ぎょっと (gyotto, 'startled').

How to study with hiragana flashcards

The point of beginner hiragana flashcards isn't just memorising characters — it's connecting them to real vocabulary the moment you learn them. Use the deck this way:

Why GY combined kana matter

The GY yōon group is the first of the diacritic yōon — KY plus the dakuten ゛. ぎゃ appears mostly in vivid onomatopoeia (ぎゃー, gyaa, the scream sound; ぎゃーぎゃー, gyaagyaa, "crying loudly") and a few compounds (逆, gyaku, "reverse / opposite" — though usually read on its own as gyaku). ぎゅ is far more common — it anchors 牛乳 (gyuunyuu, "milk"), 牛肉 (gyuuniku, "beef"), 牛 (gyuu, "cow"), and the onomatopoeia ぎゅっと (gyutto, "tightly / firmly"). ぎょ is rich in Sino-Japanese compounds: 行儀 (gyougi, "manners / etiquette"), 行列 (gyouretsu, "queue / procession"), 漁業 (gyogyou, "fishing industry"), 業 (gyou, "business / industry" — appears as a suffix on industry names: 工業 kougyou, 農業 nougyou), and the surprise onomatopoeia ぎょっと (gyotto, "startled").

Are these flashcards really free? Yes — completely free. Print as many as you like, share with classmates, use them in your classroom. StudyHiragana.com is supported by interactive practice tools, not paywalls.
Do I need to know any kanji? No. Every card uses hiragana only — there are no kanji to memorise. The English meaning is on the back for reference.
Are these flashcards good for kids? Absolutely. The vocabulary is concrete and simple, and the kana are written in a clean serif font that's easy to recognise.
Can I print them on smaller paper? The layout is tuned for US letter-size paper. If you print on A4, set your printer to "fit to page" — the cards will scale down a bit but the front/back alignment still works.
