Kana Rain

Real words rain down as kana — tap the characters in order to spell each one. Start with あいうえお and unlock a new family every level.

Learn Hiragana by Spelling Real Words

Kana Rain turns hiragana practice into a spelling game. A real Japanese word appears at the top with its meaning; its kana rain down the lane and you tap them in the correct order to spell the reading. The prompt toggle lets you show the target in romaji or kana, so you can play whether you're reading the sounds or the characters. Because the game starts at the five vowels あいうえお and only widens as you clear levels, you can begin on your very first day of study.

How the levels work

Every level maps to one kana family, and levels are cumulative. Level 1 is あいうえお; clear it and Level 2 folds in かきくけこ while keeping the vowels; Level 3 adds さしすせそ, and so on through the dakuten (が, ざ, だ, ば, ぱ) and yōon (きゃ, しゃ, ちゃ…) families. Only words whose kana you've unlocked can appear, so the vocabulary grows exactly in step with what you've learned. Your level, furthest-reached level, and prompt preference are saved in your browser — the level picker lets you jump back to any level you've reached.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know all the kana first?

No. Kana Rain begins with just the five vowels and unlocks one family at a time, so it's playable from day one and grows with you.

How do I clear a level?

Spell five words correctly at the current level and you level up — the next kana family unlocks and joins the pool. The progress bar shows how many words remain.

Is it free?

Yes — completely free, no account required, and it works on phones, tablets, and desktops.
