ZAJIZUZEZO Hiragana Flashcards — Printable, Front and Back

Beginner-friendly Japanese words you can read with the Z row (ざ, じ, ず, ぜ, ぞ) plus every base kana and the G row you already know. The Z row is the S row with two tiny tick marks (゛) added at the upper right — the same diacritic that turned K into G. Print on letter-size paper, flip on the long edge, cut along the dashed lines.

Free Printable Hiragana Flashcards for Beginners

These ZAJIZUZEZO hiragana flashcards drill the Z row — the second of the dakuten rows. Adding the two tick marks ゛ to an S-row kana voices it: さ (sa) becomes ざ (za), し (shi) becomes じ (ji), and so on. Once you know the S row, the Z row is again a free upgrade — same shapes, just two extra ticks.

You get double-sided flashcards printed on letter-size paper (8.5 × 11 inches). The front of each card shows the Japanese word in hiragana; the back shows the English meaning plus the romaji reading. The Z row introduces (ji) — the same shape as し with ticks — which appears in countless everyday words: 時間 (jikan, time), 自分 (jibun, self), 元気じゃない (genki janai, not well). It also unlocks ず (zu) for verb forms and ぞ as a sentence-final particle.

What's on each card?

How to study with hiragana flashcards

The point of beginner hiragana flashcards isn't just memorising characters — it's connecting them to real vocabulary the moment you learn them. Use the deck this way:

Why the Z row matters

The Z row is the most-used dakuten row after G. shows up in essential everyday words — 時間 (jikan, "time"), 自分 (jibun, "self"), 同じ (onaji, "same"), 字 (ji, "character / letter") — and inside the casual copula じゃ (じゃない, "is not"; じゃあ, "well then"). packs into 雑誌 (zasshi, "magazine") and ござ (goza, mat), appears in 水 (mizu, water) and the negative-form ending 〜ず. shows up in 全部 (zenbu, "everything") and as the masculine sentence-final particle ぜ. Note the romaji collision: ji can map to either じ (this row) or ぢ (D row) — modern Japanese almost always uses じ.

Are these flashcards really free? Yes — completely free. Print as many as you like, share with classmates, use them in your classroom. StudyHiragana.com is supported by interactive practice tools, not paywalls.
Do I need to know any kanji? No. Every card uses hiragana only — there are no kanji to memorise. The English meaning is on the back for reference.
Are these flashcards good for kids? Absolutely. The vocabulary is concrete and simple, and the kana are written in a clean serif font that's easy to recognise.
Can I print them on smaller paper? The layout is tuned for US letter-size paper. If you print on A4, set your printer to "fit to page" — the cards will scale down a bit but the front/back alignment still works.
